Corales Puntacana Resort Championship Picks

corales puntacana championship

The Corales Puntacana Club Championship gets a slight promotion in 2020 and will be played twice in the 2020-2021 PGA Tour season. Originally this tournament was scheduled for March that just past but was cancelled with a number of other tourneys. It is now rescheduled for this week…and will also be played in March 2021. To top it off, normally the Corales Puntacana Championship is an alternate event played the same week as the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play (which is will again in March) but because it is a standalone tournament this week, it offers up full 500 FedEx Cup points and an invitation to the Masters for the winner.

This week will see a weak field of golfers as many of the best take a break after last week’s US Open and start to be strategic in making their schedule leading up to the Masters in November. There will be some talent to bet on this week but you will need to do some more research into some of the PGA Tour pros in this week’s field.

Favorites to win the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship

Mackenzie Hughes

ODDS TO WIN – 15 to 1

If there is one favorite in this week’s field it probably would be Hughes. He is one of the highest ranked in the OWGR this week and he finished in 2nd in last year’s Corales Puntacana. He had a strong finish to the year although like many good golfers he was a victim of Winged Foot and missed the cut. In a weak field sometimes you have to look at the most talented as the favorites to bet on.

Emiliano Grillo

ODDS TO WIN – 25 to 1

I will probably die and the last bet I ever make will be on Grillo. I was always high in him and for the longest time he paid off in twosome and threesome bets (he was a big stud for me playing fantasy golf too at DraftKings for a long time) but his career seems to have levelled off. He still shows signs of life occasionally and has played well in the last few months. Given how little talent is playing this week it may be time to dust off some of the old Grillo betting slips and add a new one to the pile this week.

Corales Championship Sleeper Picks

Pat Perez

ODDS TO WIN – 40 to 1

Perez is always a crap shoot to bet on. He plods along the PGA Tour and then like a gopher occasionally pops up on a leaderboard and makes a run at winning. In a poor golf field Perez could once again pop up to see if his shadow is out to see if there still is a golf career in the forecast but he isn’t a strong pick to win…hence why I have him as a sleeper pick this week.

Denny McCarthy

ODDS TO WIN – 35 to 1

McCarthy’s career seems to be on a bit of an upswing with last year being his best one on the PGA Tour to date. He has played at the Corales Puntacana tournament twice finishing in 26th and 4th and could be a sneaky bet to make especially since the odds makers won’t give him much hope to win.

Other Bets To Consider

Corey Conners – Conners is a bit of a boom or bust pick. He had a great start to last season and then fell back after the break. He missed the cut last week at the US Open but only by one stroke. He is one of the better golfers in the field this week and has played the course a few times in his career and has a pretty good record there. He is worthy of a look at generous betting odds.

Patrick Rodgers – Rodgers’ career on the PGA Tour seems to be one that will never be more than a guy that hangs around the top 125 and grinds away a career. He came out as a talented rookie and just never lived up to the hype. He has had some good finishes lately and had a 22nd place finish at the Corales Puntacana a few years back in his only appearance. Not a great bet to make but one worth considering regardless.
