2020 Wyndham Championship Sleeper Picks

wyndham championship sleepers

Our 1st major of the year – The PGA Championship – saw a logjam atop the leaderboard heading to the back nine on Sunday.  This made for some very exciting golf viewing with as many as 12 golfers in contention with what looked like was going to be a huge multi-way playoff.  But, in the end, Collin Morikawa hit a couple of incredible shots with his EAGLE on the 16th being the final dagger to the field, proving that this young stud is absolutely for real!

This week, the PGA tour stops at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina for the 2020 Wyndham Championship.  Because this is a smaller event than the average weekly tournament, many of the top golfers in the world will be taking the week off to rest up for next week’s Fedex Cup playoff event – The Northern Trust in Boston.  This is good news for bettors like us who want to nail a longshot as this could be more of a wide-open event than usual.

Results Recap

TPC Harding Park in San Francisco ended up being a solid challenge that proved difficult for many of the underdogs last week.  Bottom line is…our picks didn’t have much of a shot.  Louis Oosthuizen and Harry English were the only picks that were looking good come the weekend and both just couldn’t contend with the great rounds by some of the world’s best.

Reasoning Behind This Week’s Sleepers

I will be looking at past performances at the Wyndham as well as who has been hot lately and which golfers have been improving or have contended in recent weeks.

Here are some key factors to consider for the 2020 Wyndham Championship:

  1. The course features large greens with a lot of slope, so the best putters will have an advantage with many golfers three or four putting.

  2. Up and downs will be very tough, so the best scramblers will have an edge.  Top iron players will finish on top because they won’t have to face tough scrambling situations.

  3. Despite back-to-back holes facing in opposite directions, making it difficult if there are windy conditions, there will be loads of birdies and scores will be low – look for the winner to post a -20 or better.

TOP SLEEPER PICK FOR THE 2020 WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Si Woo Kim (40 to 1)

si woo kim golfer

Kim comes into the 2020 Wyndham Championship red hot.  He has made 6 straight cuts, including 2 top 15 finishes and was in contention at the PGA Championship ending up tied for 13th at -7, just six shots back of the eventual winning score.  Kim finished 5th last year at Sedgefield C.C. (-17) and won the tourney back in 2016.  He is an obvious top pick as my sleeper of the week.

ANOTHER LONGSHOT TO WAGER ON

Harris English (25 to 1)

English is the hottest player on tour not to win a title this year.  He was on fire to end 2019 and in 2020 he has made 8/9 cuts and ha finished in the top 20 in 7 of those – incredible…but he has only cracked the top 10 once – regrettable!  He also has a good record at the Wyndham in North Carolina playing 6 times – making all 6 cuts, with a 10th place and 11th place finish in the mix.  If it weren’t for the gut feeling I have about Kim this week and the slightly better odds, Harris English would be my top sleeper pick for the Wyndham Championship.

DEEP SLEEPER PICK

Lanto Griffin (80 to 1)

lanto griffin golfer

I was impressed by Griffin’s performance at last week’s major. He finished tied for 19th at -5 and had three rounds under par.  He has finished in the top 25 three times since the Covid-19 layoff and his play has been consistent with no blowup rounds.  Yes, he is a huge longshot – but worth a play at 80-1 odds.

OTHER 2020 WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP LONGSHOT WAGERS

Ryan Moore (45 to 1) – Moore has had good results at the Wyndham Championship finishing tied for 6th last year at -16 and tied for 10th in 2015 at -13.  He has actually won the event way back in 2009, so he has lots of solid experience on the course and will be a bargain at 45-1 odds.  He also has two 12th place finishes in a row the last couple weeks.

Rory Sabbatini (80 to 1) – Rory should be in contention come the weekend here.  He has finished 4th, 6th and 8th posting scores as low as -17.  He hasn’t played badly as of late.  I like the 80-1 odds I am getting too.

Brice Garnett (100 to 1) – Garnett is another golfer who likes this course.  Garnett has posted a -16 (T-6th), a -13 (T-20th) and a -11 (T-20th) in the last four years here.  He also played well finishing T-26th at the 3M Open a couple weeks back.  He is worth a bet.

Jim Furyk (100 to 1) – The old man knows this course well making 13/14 cuts here including 6 top 10 finishes.  He has finished 2nd, 4th, 7th, 9th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 14th here in the past.  He may be the ticket this week in a tourney that doesn’t mean much to the world’s best young golfers right now. Take him as one of your best bet sleeper picks this week.

Bottom Line

This will be one of the least watched tourneys since golf’s return in June because it is the heart of vacation time in the summer and the NBA and NHL playoffs will be running alongside the MLB shortened season.  I will be watching with the hopes I see some amazing shots and a nice long shot come out on top to win one of my bets.
