2020 Safeway Open Picks

And just like that the 2020-2021 PGA Tour season begins! The Safeway Open kicks off the 2020-2021 PGA Tour season on Sept 10th. What a ride it’s been the last few months and with the Tour Championship just ending last week and the 2020 US Open teeing off next week, this week the Safeway Open for bettors will require a lot of research to figure out the players that have a shot at winning.
Safeway Open
Sep 10th to 13th
Defending Champion
Cameron Champ (-17)
Silverado Country Club
Par: 72, Yardage: 7166 yds
Best Course History
Hideki Matsuyama
Ryan Moore
Martin Laird
There will be many players that take the week off to prep for the US Open so the golfers that you will get to pick from are PGA Tour players wanting to get an early start on the new season and were the top 125 on the money list from the previous season. Unlike previous years, there won’t be a new crop of Korn Ferry grads to look at as early sleeper picks but they will get in some playing time later in the year.
The early betting favorites for the Safeway Open will be some of the big names that have committed to play such as Sergio Garcia, Shane Lowry, Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar and Phil Mickelson. These are the guys that everyone will look at to pick to win but history has shown that no favorite or big name player has ever won the Safeway Open in its 13+ years as a tournament.
Admittedly we have had a hard time making betting picks this week but we will also look at Golfstats for making our betting picks when the tournament starts. Try them out for this PGA Tour year, there are 50 PGA Tour events on the schedule and you can get your money’s worth by joining Golfstats this week for a full year!

Favorite Betting Picks for the 2020 Safeway Open
Phil Mickelson
A brand ambassador for the Safeway Open he’s had a solid career at the Silverado golf course and although he had a spotty end to his PGA Tour season he went out and won his first Champions Tour event winning the 2020 Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National. In a weak field and trying to prep for next week’s US Open this could be an interesting betting pick to make as an outright winner for the Safeway Open.
Safeway Open Sleeper Picks
Emiliano Grillo
His first and only PGA Tour victory was at the Safeway Open (then called the Frys.com Open). Grillo to me used to be a star to count on as a fantasy golf pick at DraftKings but in recent years he’s been too spotty to pick and as a bet I only use him for twosome and threesome plays on rare occasions. He finished the year off OK a few weeks ago and I am taking a bit of a flier on him in a weak field on a course that he has played the last 5 years on.
Doc Redman
Redman played well down the stretch of the 2019-2020 PGA Tour season and gets to start off his new season at the Safeway Open where he missed the cut in his only ever event at Silverado. A lot has happened since last year’s MC and I am looking at a different golfer to consider making an outright bet on this week to win.
Other Safeway Open Bets Worth A Look
Brendan Steele
A two time back-to-back winner of the Safeway Open, Steele almost made it to last week’s Tour Championship just missing out by three positions in the FedEx standings. Since his wins at Silverado he’s had mediocre showings at the Safeway tournament but could have a rebound week with many has-been’s dotting the field this week.
Brandt Snedeker
On the downside of his PGA Tour career but Snedeker has played well at Silverado in the past and I am betting on the notion that he can pop up the leader board and make a run at things. He is probably more of a Sleeper Pick this week and I will look more at him for daily prop bets but I may still drop a few bucks on him to win outright at the right odds.
