Last year was the first year for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, albeit with a weaker field of golfers. This year, for 2020, the field of PGA Tour players is a bit stronger, but still a letdown compared to the last few weeks. For golf bettors looking for some wager action this week, the field so far has some decent picks committed to playing such as: Patrick Reed, Bryson DeChambeau, Jason Day, Kevin Kisner, Kevin Na, Viktor Hovland, Sungjae Im, Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson.
Presumably, many golfers are taking the week off after playing the last three weeks and are gearing up for the two upcoming tournaments at Muirfield Village – The Memorial Tournament, which will have a very strong field, and the Workday Charity Open, which was a tournament created to make up the gap of the John Deere Classic cancelling their tourney.
Last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic was a birdie-fest with the winning score being -25 and the cut line being -5. So, if you are going to bet props, keep that factor in mind.
So far in 2020, we’ve seen the top golfers in the world high on the leaderboards, so a golf betting strategy to use to make picks this week is to look for favorites that have a good value, while keeping an eye on some of the long shots that could pay off nicely – especially those that played in the Rocket Mortgage Classic last year and are familiar with the Detroit Golf Club. Here are some of our top bets to win the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic this week:
2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic Betting Favorites
Bryson DeChambeau +650
Bryson’s been on fire since golf’s return and near the top of the leaderboard in every tournament. I worry that he will start to tire out so much uninterrupted play, but I assume that he will soon take time off to rest up. He has reformed his body and is bombing the ball and could manhandle the Detroit Golf Club if his putting short game can come together.
Rocket Mortgage Classic Longshot Picks
Rory Sabbatini +4500
Sabbatini has had a nice come back from the pandemic break with a 14th place and 21st place finish. Sabbatini took last week off and lines up nicely for the Rocket Mortgage Classic after playing at the Detroit Golf Club last year and finishing tied for 3rd. Sabbatini makes a great bet at long odds this week in a tournament that is weaker than the last few that we’ve seen, and makes a sneaky bet for head to head and threesome wagers this week.
Doc Redman +4500
More of a huge underdog bet to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic than a “sleeper”, but he did play at the Detroit course last year and finished in 2nd place and has had three respectable showings in the last three tournaments – making the cut in all of them. Do I think Redman will win at his long odds? Probably not, but that’s what makes him a longshot and at least worth taking a look at depending on what his odds when making a bet at Intertops this week.
Other Betting Picks To Consider
Sungjae Im (+2200) – Im had a solid 10th place finish at the Charles Schwab and missed the cut at the RBC before playing well enough again last week to at least finish the weekend. Im is too good a golfer to be this mediocre and could sneak up in this tournament. He had a solid result last year at the Rocket Mortgage Classic finishing in 21st and could have been better if he didn’t just shoot par on the final Sunday.
Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) – Matsuyama hasn’t hit a groove yet since returning to golf with just a missed cut at the RBC Heritage to show for the last three weeks. At the Rocket Mortgage Classic he may be overlooked even in a weaker field of golfers, but that just means a better value for you if you decide to make a bet on him outright to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Although he may not be looked at too much this week because of his poor beginning of the golf restart, he is still a Top 25 golfer in the world and more than capable of winning this week. Matsuyama played last year at the Detroit Golf Club and finished in a tie for 13th.
