2020 3M Open Fantasy Picks

3m open fantasy picks

We are going to see a drastically different tournament this week compared to the massacre we saw at the Memorial Tournament last week. The course that Jack built put a beating on some of the world’s best golfers and quite frankly put a beating on most of my DFS lineups. I hope you guys faired better but it was a difficult week to get 6 of 6 through the cut as most of the top owned guys looked terrible including Bryson DeChambeau, Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka to name a few.

The 3M Open enters it’s second year of existence and the course will play much easier then what we saw last week. The TPC Twin Cities golf course is a par 71 at 7468 yards in total length. The course should play to the advantage of long hitters off the tee and good putters. The greens are small but very manageable with little undulation. I think the best players to target this week will be golfers that excel in GIR and putting. If you can get it on the green with your approach shots, birdies should come in bunches. Last year Matthew Wolff won the 3M Open with a -21 score and I expect to see the same low number in 2020.

The field for the 2020 3M Open is much, much weaker then last week’s tournament and there are very few golfers in the high end range.

  • There are only 7 out of the Top 50 golfers playing this week:

Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood, Tony Finau, Paul Casey, Bernd Wiesberger, Erik van Rooyen

3M Open Fantasy Picks

I think this one is anyone’s tournament to win as the field is just filled with average golfers and the top half have not been performing that great as of late. I will likely look to have a balanced lineup built around 1 guy in the top tier and then the rest made up of guys in the $7500K to $8500 price range.

The Top Tier This Week

Dustin Johnson
Brooks Koepka
Tony Finau
Tommy Fleetwood
Paul Casey

Bubba Watson
Matthew Wolff
Lucas Glover
Russell Henley
Harris English

Top Tier Pick

Paul Casey

The top tier is filled with under performers this week and I believe the majority of ownership is going to the guy who played the best last week, that being Tony Finau. Casey did not have a good week at all at The Memorial but guess what, very few golfers did. I’m not going to hold last week against him, in fact I’m throwing it out the window as just one of those weeks. Prior to the Memorial Tournament Casey was playing some decent golf especially before the season was halted due to the Covid-19 virus. He is averaging 78 fantasy points in his last 3 events and I think his approach game can eat this course up. I can see reasons to go with either Brooks or Dustin because of the potential low ownership but I just don’t trust those guys at all anymore till I see consistent play. Casey to me is the most reliable in this group and is 15th in GIR on the PGA tour.

Projected Highest Owned From This Tier
Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood

Most Interesting Player In Top Tier
Tommy Fleetwood: Tommy has not played yet since the restart of the 2020 season so it is hard to predict what to expect from him. He has always been a consistent threat to win and may come out on fire right from the get go. i actually think he will be high owned and that’s why I’m shying away from him this week.

Top Mid Tier Pick

Jhonattan Vegas

Vegas is at a great price on DraftKings at $7900 for the way he has played on these types of courses recently. He was 24th at the Travellers Championship and 17th at the RBC Heritage both shot making courses where GIR was an important stat. He’s 44th in GIR and 17th in Driving Distance which should give him a nice little advantage at the TPC. He is averaging 70 points in his last 3 events and with such a weak field he could be a standout player in the mid-range price range. He does not a have a Top Ten this year but this is the type of tournament where he should easily compete if he is playing well. He didn’t play last week so his confidence should be higher than some of the other players who put up embarrassing scores at the Memorial.

Projected Highest Owned From This Tier
Henrik Norlander

Top Sleeper Pick

Richy Werenski

More then likely you are going to find a whole lot of the low end sleeper players in the Top 15 this week and picking the right guys is going to be a crapshoot. When the field is this weak anyone of these guys can have a career tournament and take home the win. My goal is to target the one guy playing well leading into the 3M Open whose stats look decent enough to have a great finish. That lands me on Werenski who comes into the 3M Open with 5 consecutive cuts made. He has four Top 25 finishes in 2020 and has played well since we re-started the season. In his last 3 events he has put up 77, 93 and 76 fantasy points which for his price range is great value. His putter has been pretty damn good this year ranking 37th on the PGA tour so if he can find the greens with regularity this week I think the birdies can come in bunches for him.

Projected Highest Owned From This Tier
Wyndham Clark

Last Week’s Picks

Like we mentioned earlier, last week was completely disgusting in terms of my fantasy picks but I did have one good sleeper pick in Harris English. At 8% owned he finished 13th in a tournament that saw most of the top golfers in the world miss the cut or perform well below average.

Harris English -13th

FanDuel Points = 52

Dustin Johnson – MC
